Imagine being told your house is sitting on poisoned ground and that your garden is so full of arsenic and mercury it will have to be removed. This is exactly what happened to the residents of Sint Amands, near Brussels. They are not alone: almost half Europe’s soil is damaged – prompting the EU to develop a protection strategy to protect the very foundations of our existence.
