Greek penalty
Koroupitos, on the Greek island of Crete, has achieved notoriety for all the wrong reasons. In 2000, the European Court of Justice slapped a 20,000 euro a day fine on Athens for failing to apply EU waste legislation at the site – the first time a country has been penalized for flouting European environmental laws.
