Climate action: putting Europe's new energy policy into practice

On 23 January 2008, the European Commission proposed a number of measures making up the EU's new energy and climate package. The aim was to fight climate change more effectively while boosting Europe's energy security and competitiveness. The package included extensive measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions and achieve a 20% reduction in the EU's greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, and will rise to 30% if other developed countries agree to do the same. This, in particular, includes the obligation to obtain 20% of its energy from renewable sources by the same date.
