Natura 2000 is the centerpiece of the European Union nature & biodiversity policy. Is the largest network of protected areas in the world. The aim of the network is to assure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
With EU financial backing, 27 barnacle gatherers in Spain have been able to develop a niche business producing goose barnacle delicacies, such as pâtés, and supplying them to gourmet shops across the country. These products have been developed from smaller barnacles which fetch a low price when fresh but must, nevertheless, be harvested to avoid them colonising the larger, high value barnacles.
